So far, a forest fire affecting rural areas of the commune of Cholchol in the La Araucanía region has left a total of eight homes destroyed and over 300 hectares burned.

At this hour, the fire dubbed "Coipuco" —an area located about 30 kilometers from Temuco— is being fought on the ground and by air. The blaze broke out yesterday afternoon and spread rapidly due to strong winds to sectors such as Ancapulli, Malalche, and Peuchén.

Gradually, daylight has revealed the extent of the damage caused by this disaster, which started in one area and then developed multiple hotspots, complicating containment efforts.

In the Coipuco sector, very close to the command post, is the home of 73-year-old Silvia Aguilera, who described to Radio Bío the nightmare she endured as flames surrounded her property.

Ana Maripán, from the Huillinco sector, said the fire was at times uncontrollable, but the quick response of emergency teams was crucial in saving homes.

Meanwhile, Conaf director María Teresa Huentequeo confirmed that eight homes were destroyed by the fire and stated that the Red Alert will remain in place as long as conditions warrant it.

This Tuesday, helicopters and planes are working at the site to combat the fire on all fronts.

The Municipality of Cholchol reported that a municipal shelter was set up at the James Mundell High School, where only three people remain today, as most have returned to their homes.

Today, Cholchol is expected to reach a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, which, combined with the wind in the area, makes firefighting efforts more challenging.
