This Thursday afternoon, it was reported that the Commission for Peace and Understanding agreed to request an extension of its operations until April 30 to prepare its final report with recommendations.

It should be noted that these recommendations were originally due to President Boric this Friday, January 31.

However, after a year of work, the members of the Commission have yet to reach an agreement regarding land reparations.

This was announced through a statement, which indicated: "The Ministry General Secretariat of the Presidency reports that the Presidential Commission for Peace and Understanding has agreed to request President of the Republic Gabriel Boric Font to extend its operations until April 30, 2025, so it can prepare the final report with its recommendations."

Additionally, it was stated: "The issues affecting the regions of Bío Bío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos, and Los Lagos are among the most complex, difficult, and prolonged challenges the country faces. Given this, all efforts, including this additional time, are worthwhile to recommend concrete and lasting measures in line with the Commission's mandate."

Commission Member Had Already Requested an Extension

In this context, commissioner and president of the Malleco Farmers' Association, Sebastián Naveillán, said—prior to this agreement—that they still had not reached a consensus on land reparations, revealing that he had requested an extension for the Commission's work.

Furthermore, sources from Radio Bío Bío indicate that the Presidential Commission for Peace and Understanding quantified land reparations at 370,000 hectares in the Southern Macrozone.

It is worth mentioning that some view this situation with concern, considering this will be a year marked by parliamentary elections, and thus they do not look favorably on the discussion of proposals extending beyond this month.
