147 Arrested for Timber Theft in Los Ríos During 2024: Seizures Amount to $1.5 Billion
147 people were arrested in the Los Ríos region for the crime of timber theft. The estimated value of the seized items exceeds 1.5 billion pesos.
At the start of a new year, the Criminal Investigation Brigade of the PDI in Valdivia reviewed the work of the specialized group dedicated to combating timber theft.
Among the key figures resulting from the civil police's efforts in this area are the execution of 50 cases, leading to the arrest of 147 individuals across the region for the aforementioned crime, as stated by Subprefect Cristian Muñoz of the timber theft unit.
"Last year, 2024, this specialized group achieved the arrest of 147 people for this crime, in addition to related offenses such as weapons law violations and receiving stolen goods. All this through 50 investigative procedures carried out in this region," he stated.
Among the items seized during the investigations were 36 trucks, 50 smaller vehicles and chainsaws, along with other tools and machinery, with an estimated value exceeding 1.5 billion pesos.
One of the most notable cases involved the arrest of three men in La Unión, who set up an illegal sawmill and processed over 100 trees.
The civil police urged the public to report this crime promptly by calling 134 or *4242.
