Heatwave of up to 39°C warned in 8 regions and category 5 atmospheric river to affect the south
This weekend, a stark weather forecast predicts extreme temperatures in the south-central part of the country, including a Meteorological Alert, and a category 5 atmospheric river (the highest on its scale) for the southernmost regions of Chile.
Specifically, while some regions may experience a heatwave with thermometers reaching highs of 39°C, others could see up to 60 millimeters of rain in 6 hours with a high zero isotherm and winds exceeding 100 km/h.
Alert for extreme temperatures of up to 39°C
The Chilean Meteorological Directorate (DMC) issued a Meteorological Alert for extreme temperatures in the regions of Valparaíso, Metropolitan, O’Higgins, Maule, Ñuble, and Bío Bío.
According to the warning, areas in the Coastal Mountain Range, Valley, and Pre-Cordillera will begin to feel the heatwave this Thursday, January 9, and Friday, January 10, with highs between 32 and 34°C. Then, between Saturday and Sunday of the same week, thermometers will rise to extreme highs of 39°C, as reported by the weather forecast.
Additionally, the DMC issued two other specific Meteorological Alerts for the province of Malleco in the La Araucanía region and the entire Los Lagos region for the same weekend. Notably, maximum temperatures between 30 and 32°C are forecast for the coastal areas of the latter region.
