In a joint effort to heal the scars left by wildfires and climate change, the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) conducted a training session at Hacienda Bellavista, Quebrada Escobares. Nineteen neighbors and landowners gathered for this educational event, set in a five-hectare area previously devastated by the mega-fire of February 2024.

Conaf's initiative focuses on teaching practices for managing and restoring degraded native forests. During the session, participants observed techniques implemented on-site, such as creating crescent-shaped furrows and dikes, as well as revegetation with endemic species like molle, litre, and huingán. These actions aim to combat erosion and enhance water capture and retention, vital resources for ecosystem regeneration.

Mauricio Núñez, regional director of Conaf, highlighted the opportunities provided by the Native Forest Law (20.283) and government contributions that enable landowners to apply for recovery and forest management projects. These measures are reinforced by the Ministry of Agriculture's "Siembra por Chile" program, which funds water and soil conservation works.

Benito Cabezón, owner of Hacienda Bellavista, emphasized the fruits of collaborative work, showcasing significant regeneration of the property with native species and proper management of ravines. The positive response from trees and the growing motivation among neighbors are clear indicators of the success of these repopulation initiatives.

In addition to restoration techniques, Conaf officials provided recommendations for preventing forest fires, stressing the importance of responsible vegetation management and safe use of power tools. They also reminded attendees of the current ban on burning agricultural and forestry waste in the region, a crucial measure to prevent future disasters.

The training in Quebrada Escobares serves as an inspiring example of how education and community action can play a fundamental role in healing our forests and combating the adverse effects of climate change.
