UdeC Shines at Wood Week 2025 with Innovation and Sustainability
The University of Concepción (UdeC) made its presence felt for the second consecutive year at Wood Week 2025, an event organized by Madera21 of Corma in the Bicentennial Park of Vitacura.
The Faculty of Forest Sciences at UdeC not only exhibited its academic and scientific work in the forestry area but also focused on environmental education and sustainability, demonstrating its commitment to the full cycle of forest production.
The Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Eugenio Sanfuentes Von Stowasser, highlighted the importance of the institutional presence at the event to strengthen the University's position in the forestry and timber sector. The live display at the UdeC stand included fungi, insects, native plants, soils, and preserved species, attracting the attention of children, families, and industry professionals.
Academic Tamara Gorena Hernández, in charge of the stand, explained that the display represented the three working areas of the faculty: biotechnology, forest engineering, and conservation. Additionally, the Faculty's identity was reinforced by symbols such as a puma sculpture, which has become an attraction for the community, especially for children.
The UdeC Nature Campus, a project promoting the conservation of the deciduous forest of Concepción and environmental education, also played a prominent role in Wood Week. Rosa Román Durán, a student of Natural Resource Conservation Engineering and project monitor, shared with visitors the richness of local fauna and flora, as well as camera trapping activities and forest bathing.
In the academic sphere, Professor Vicente Hernández Castillo from the Department of Forest Management and Environment gave a talk on "Sustainability, Resilience, and Urban Development: The Strategic Role of Forests and Wood," emphasizing the relevance of wood in mitigating climate change and proposing strategies such as forest certifications, biological corridors, and environmental compensation mechanisms.
Wood Week was also an opportunity for the UdeC Faculty of Forest Sciences to establish strategic connections with authorities and representatives of the sector, such as the Minister of Agriculture, María Ignacia Fernández Gatíca, and other leaders from industry and academia.
UdeC's participation in this event reflects its expanded vision and efforts to generate interdisciplinary collaborations, showcasing the strength of the Faculty and the University in the forestry and environmental fields, and reaffirming its commitment to sustainable development and environmental education.
