During preventive patrols, Carabineros from Trupán and Polcura, in the Tucapel commune, surprised two adults who were traveling in a pickup truck with firewood in the rear of the vehicle.

According to the uniformed police, both were apprehended in the act of stealing pieces of trees, and chainsaws they used to cut the wood were also confiscated from them.

By order of the Yungay prosecutor, both detainees, who have prior police records but no current cases, will be placed under detention control for the crime of wood theft.

It is worth remembering that Chile's Law No. 21,488 defines the crime of wood theft, penalizing anyone who robs or steals logs or pieces of wood. Among its main modifications are the establishment of harsher penalties for wood theft, the authorization of special investigation techniques for organized cases, the requirement of electronic dispatch guides for transporting wood, and penalties for those unable to justify possession of wood.

An accessory fine of 75 to 100 UTM is established if the stolen wood exceeds 10 UTM.

The law also establishes criminal liability for legal entities in the crime of robbery or theft of logs when the offenses are committed in their interest or for their benefit by their representatives or those acting under their supervision.

Carabineros reported that preventive patrols in rural areas have been expanded because during this season, many crimes of wood theft from private properties occur.
