New Arson Attack Affects Sawmill in Cañete with Two Machines Destroyed
A sawmill in the Santa Ángela area of Cañete was the target of an arson attack early this morning, resulting in the total destruction of two front loaders. The incident, which occurred near Route P-602, is being investigated by authorities, who do not rule out a possible connection to Mapuche legal causes.
Subprefect Carlos Henríquez, head of the Cañete Anti-Kidnapping BIPE, stated that after neighbors alerted them, specialized teams were deployed to conduct initial procedures. "Unknown individuals allegedly entered the property with the purpose of setting the machinery on fire," explained Henríquez. Ballistic evidence, a banner with ethnic attribution, and other items that could be key to the investigation were found at the scene.
The Biobío Regional Prosecutor's Office confirmed that third-party involvement is being investigated and instructed the BIPE and the PDI's LACRIM to clarify the facts and find those responsible.
A banner found at the scene attributes the authorship of the attack to the organization Weikan Auka Mapu (WAM), and mentions Miguel Llanquileo Cona and Eric Montoya Montoya, currently being prosecuted for crimes related to weapons and vehicle receiving.
This attack adds to a series of similar incidents in the province of Arauco, a region that has been the scene of repeated arson attacks in recent years. During 2025, there have already been 3 incidents of this type.
