PDI Launches Environmental Brigade in Biobío and Ñuble
The Chilean Investigative Police (PDI) officially inaugurated the Environmental and Cultural Heritage Crime Investigation Brigade (Bidema) in the city of Tomé, with jurisdiction in the Biobío and Ñuble regions.
The PDI's general director, Eduardo Cerna Lozano, emphasized the importance of the new brigade not only as a technical investigative body but also as an ethical and social responsibility for future generations. "The Biobío Region is rich in flora, fauna, culture, and historical elements, meaning it has all the necessary resources to establish a brigade that can be a binding and permanent element in making this region, together with the Ñuble region, safer from an environmental and heritage standpoint," stated Cerna Lozano.
Bidema presents itself as an expert and specialized response for the effective protection of ecosystems and heritage assets. Its scientific approach to investigating environmental and heritage crimes will be complemented by the use of specialized techniques and forensic evidence. Among its objectives are strengthening the investigation of heritage crimes, protecting archaeological sites, monuments, and cultural assets, investigating animal abuse cases, and promoting environmental education.
Eduardo Pacheco, the presidential delegate, highlighted the importance of Bidema's location in Tomé, which allows for faster action and coordinated professional work between the Biobío and Ñuble regions. "This positioning in the commune of Tomé gives it this highly relevant bi-regional character," added Pacheco.
With the inauguration of Bidema, it is expected that the Biobío and Ñuble regions will have greater security in the protection of their natural and cultural heritage, benefiting local communities and the environment.
The ceremony also included the presence of Governor Sergio Giacaman García and Regional Prosecutor Marcela Cartagena Ramos.
