Prosecutor's Office and Carabineros coordinate complaints following cases of timber theft
Last week, two cases of illegal timber logging were reported on the same day in Ñuble: one in the commune of El Carmen, where native forest was being cut down; the other in the commune of San Fabián de Alico, involving theft of pine wood from a forestry property.
Against this immediate backdrop, authorities from both institutions held a meeting in Ñuble to strengthen coordination between the Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf), aiming to provide background information regarding complaints about timber theft on private properties, especially native forests.
During the session, the team from the Department of Evaluation and Enforcement of Conaf Ñuble provided information about pre-mountain areas where unauthorized logging and illegal timber extraction have been detected, in order to support the investigations currently being conducted by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
The director of Conaf Ñuble, Juan Salvador Ramírez Nova, stated that "illicit logging and timber theft operations, not being backed by management plans, generate significant negative impacts on forest ecosystems, such as loss of biodiversity, degradation of forests and soils, alteration of water regimes, and harm to local communities."
This initiative is part of the inter-institutional coordination that is essential to effectively combat this type of crime and strengthen the protection of the country's forest heritage.
At the meeting, the Public Prosecutor's Office was represented by the prosecutor for Criminal Analysis and Investigative Focuses of Ñuble, Rolando Canahuate Ronda, who reported on investigative actions that have been developed and are ongoing within our region.
