Two Men Arrested for Wood Theft in Los Lagos
In a successful operation, detectives from the Wood Theft Team of the Valdivia Criminal Investigation Brigade arrested two men while they were committing a wood theft on a property in the commune of Los Lagos.
The individuals, aged 63 and 65, were caught in the act of cutting down and extracting trees of the Eucalyptus species without authorization, using tools and animals to transport the loot.
The operation took place in the El Salto area, where Investigative Police (PDI) officers intervened just as the suspects were preparing to transport 15 cubic meters of wood, valued at approximately 7.5 million pesos. In addition to the wood material, a truck, a chainsaw, and a pair of oxen used in the illegal activity were seized.
The detainees, who had no prior criminal records, were placed at the disposal of the Los Lagos Guarantee Court, awaiting the measures deemed appropriate for their case.
This incident highlights the ongoing fight against the illegal extraction of natural resources in the region, a crime that not only affects landowners but also has a negative impact on the environment and the local economy.
The swift action of the PDI has been crucial in preventing the completion of this theft and in sending a clear message to those considering engaging in similar activities: authorities are vigilant, and the consequences of these acts are severe.
