New Shelter Modules Strengthen CONAF's Night Brigades in Biobío
Equipped with bedrooms, dining areas, kitchens, bathrooms, showers, and laundry facilities, the new shelter modules of the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) are now operational in Tomé, Coronel, Yumbel, and Cañete. These consist of 32 shelters distributed across the bases in these communes, funded by resources from the Biobío Regional Government.
"These facilities represent a significant improvement over what was available before and encourage us to replicate this model in more localities across the region," emphasized Governor Sergio Giacaman during the official handover at the Punta de Parra base in Tomé.
Alberto Salgado, the base crew chief, described the shelters as "spectacular" and highlighted the importance of having a suitable space to rest after arduous shifts. Meanwhile, the regional director of CONAF, Esteban Krause, stated that the investment of $795 million will not only improve the conditions of existing brigades but also allow for their expansion during the season.
Historic Investment for Emergencies and Prevention
These modules are part of a package exceeding $26 billion aimed at improving infrastructure and equipment in the region. Among the projects are the construction of forest brigade bases in Duqueco (Los Ángeles) and Trancalco (Lebu), and the replacement of fire stations in Mulchén, Los Álamos, and San Pedro de la Paz.
Additionally, the Regional Council will vote on new programs totaling nearly $14 billion for the recovery and prevention of forests affected by fires. The acquisition of emergency communication kits worth $329 million is also planned, intended to ensure connectivity and coordination in critical situations.
"Events like the blackout earlier this year showed us the importance of municipalities having generators and internet antennas, key spaces for citizens to receive responses from the State," stated Giacaman, underscoring the Regional Government's commitment to the safety and well-being of the community.
