Valparaíso Firefighters Lead Massive Wildfire Simulation Drill
In an effort to improve coordination and effectiveness in combating wildfires, the Valparaíso Fire Department organized an extensive simulation exercise this weekend, with participation from teams in Viña del Mar, Quilpué, and Casablanca.
The maneuver, which took place in the locality of Laguna Verde, brought together over 200 volunteers and about twenty fire engines and logistical support vehicles in an operation that lasted approximately 48 hours.
The commander of the Valparaíso Fire Department, Vicente Maggiolo, emphasized the importance of these practices, stating that "these are emergencies we hope never happen, but we must be prepared to provide a timely, efficient, and effective response." The simulation included the setup of a command post, medical and logistical services, and camps for volunteers, replicating the conditions of a large-scale wildfire in the Maule Region.
Sebastián Páez, commander of the Viña del Mar Fire Department, highlighted the need for collaborative work, thanking the invitation and expressing his desire to continue cooperation among the different fire departments in the region. The activity also featured the presence of Carabineros and the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf), whose representative, Patricio Balladares, expressed his satisfaction with participating in the simulation.
Despite the success of the exercise, Maggiolo regretted the absence of the municipalities of Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, and Quilpué, emphasizing that their participation would have been beneficial for improving inter-institutional coordination. The initiative is part of the Valparaíso Fire Department's efforts to maintain its accreditation in wildfire combat and safeguard the safety of citizens and the environment.
