Farmers in La Araucanía Will Harvest Again with Support from the Army and Carabineros
Farmers in La Araucanía will once again harvest their fields accompanied by Army and Carabineros personnel as part of the Agri-Food Security Plan. The Government confirmed the incorporation of the PDI, and trade associations are requesting that these measures not become normalized.
This is a measure that has been implemented for several seasons in La Araucanía, aimed at preventing crimes and attacks on the fields that farmers harvest between January and March each year.
For this season, producers will again have the company of Army personnel due to the State of Exception or Carabineros' Public Order Control (COP) personnel while carrying out their work.
This was confirmed by the president of the Malleco Farmers, Sebastián Naveillán, indicating that for now it is necessary to maintain the so-called Safe Harvest Plan, as they estimate almost one attack per week during the summer.
However, there is concern in other trade associations, and they point out that the measures have become normalized. The president of SOFO, Eduardo Renner, said that it is necessary to work in peace.
Among the new features of the Agri-Food Security Plan for this season is the incorporation of new tools and vehicles for greater deployment in rural areas.
The Regional Ministerial Secretary of Security in La Araucanía, Israel Campusano, indicated that the Investigative Police (PDI) has also joined to investigate various crimes.
