A wildfire that broke out in the Cuchao sector of the Puqueldón commune led to the arrest of a local farmer, accused of starting the fire through unauthorized burning.

The blaze, which consumed nearly one hectare of native forest, was controlled by the prompt intervention of Firefighters and Carabineros, thus preventing its spread to nearby homes.

The emergency operation was activated following a fire alert in the area, where volunteers from the Puqueldón Fire Department worked hard to contain the flames. The rapid response of the emergency teams was crucial in confining the fire to a specific area, safeguarding the safety of residents and their homes.

The acting prefect of Chiloé, Commander María Angélica Mateos, confirmed that the cause of the fire points to negligence by the detainee. "According to information provided by the firefighters, the fire originated from an unauthorized burning carried out by a neighbor in the sector," Mateos stated. Carabineros proceeded to arrest the individual, who was identified thanks to community collaboration and the testimonies of the volunteers.

Despite the arrest, the suspect was released by order of the Prosecutor's Office, although he remains under warning and must appear before the authorities to assist in the ongoing investigation. This incident highlights the importance of following environmental regulations and proper procedures for carrying out controlled burns, in order to prevent natural disasters and protect the ecosystem.

The Puqueldón community and local authorities call for public awareness and responsibility to prevent future incidents that endanger the region's rich biodiversity and the safety of its inhabitants.
