Penco Reinforces Surveillance with Thermal Drones and Firefighter Support to Prevent Forest Fires
In an effort to anticipate the forest fire season, the Municipality of Penco has launched an innovative surveillance plan that includes the use of drones with thermal cameras and close collaboration with Firefighters and Carabineros.
This operation focuses on the prevention and early detection of fires in urban-rural interface zones, particularly in areas that have experienced recent incidents and present risks of intentional fires.
The mayor of Penco, Rodrigo Vera, emphasized the importance of technology in the fight against fires: "We are incorporating a state-of-the-art drone to conduct monitoring and prevent forest fires. This is in addition to the patrols by municipal trucks and the support of Firefighters and Carabineros, enabling better coordination and a rapid response to any eventuality."
The surveillance setup includes two trucks and four municipal employees who conduct patrols both day and night. The drone, equipped with a thermal camera, loudspeaker, and lighting system, allows for effective aerial surveillance, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Additionally, it can broadcast deterrent messages and record footage that could serve as evidence if suspicious activities are detected.
Danilo Sanhueza, second commander of the Penco Fire Department, reported on the preparations for the fire season: "We are in the process of maintaining the 4x4 vehicles and all major equipment of the Fire Department to ensure they are in optimal condition for the forest fire season."
Matías Aguayo Cabrera, Director of Public Safety, explained the drone's role in patrols: "This drone facilitates patrol tasks, optimizes resources, and includes a thermal detector that is crucial for the early detection of fires."
The surveillance plan aligns with the 2025-2026 regional prevention strategy presented by CONAF in Biobío and covers 105 km² of urban and rural areas in Penco. It is also part of an inter-municipal coordination within the framework of the Greater Concepción Forest Fire Prevention Association.
The Municipality urges the community to report suspicious behavior, avoid burning, and follow the instructions of emergency teams, thereby reinforcing preventive measures and the safety of the community against the threat of forest fires.
