Early this Friday morning, the tranquility of the Vilcún commune in the La Araucanía Region was disrupted by two simultaneous arson attacks.

The incidents, which occurred in the Natre and Traipo sectors, resulted in the destruction of a main house, sheds, machinery, and warehouses. The Weichan Auka Mapu (WAM) group claimed responsibility for the events, which left no injuries but delivered a strong political message through banners demanding the freedom of Mapuche political prisoners and referencing the case of Julia Chuñil, who disappeared nearly a year ago.

The La Araucanía Prosecutor's Office has tasked the OS9 and Labocar of Carabineros with investigating the incidents, searching for security cameras and witnesses who can provide relevant information.

Temuco prosecutor Patricio Montecinos stated that details such as the number of attackers or the use of accelerants in the fires have not yet been determined.

Javier Hueche, owner of one of the affected properties, expressed his bewilderment and concern about the insecurity in the area, highlighting the coexistence within an indigenous community and the emotional and economic impact of these attacks.

The Temuco Agricultural Development Society strongly condemned the attacks, which affected both individual farmers and cooperatives, and criticized the lack of effective action by the State to ensure security in the region. In a statement, the society emphasized that, despite efforts to show apparent normality, violence and terrorism continue to be a reality in La Araucanía.

These events underscore the complex situation facing the region, where the demands of indigenous groups and the State's response continue to generate tensions and conflicts. The community expects concrete actions that can restore peace and security in the area.
