During a nighttime operation carried out by Carabineros de Chile, a man who was attempting to start a forest fire in the Maule region was successfully detained.

The arrest was made possible thanks to an alert from neighbors in the rural area of Route K-620, Numpay crossing, who notified authorities about suspicious activities in the zone.

The individual, identified by his initials F.J.H.D. and aged 43, was caught in the act while handling a lighter near dry grasslands with the intention of starting a fire. This person, who has a police record for similar crimes, was immediately detained, preventing the spread of flames.

The attempted fire occurred in the same sector recently affected by a serious forest fire that consumed more than 1,000 hectares on Cerro Maule, an emergency that is now under control. Colonel Evelyn Osses, of the Talca Prefecture, emphasized the importance of citizen collaboration and joint work with Carabineros to prevent environmental catastrophes.

The detainee was placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry and faced a detention hearing on Friday morning. Investigations continue to determine his possible involvement in other fire incidents in the region.

The community and authorities remain on alert to prevent and combat forest fires, which represent a constant threat to the ecosystem and the safety of rural areas.
