Fire Commander Dies in Litueche During Wildfire
The Litueche Fire Department and the Cardenal Caro community are in mourning following the confirmed death of Luis Becerra Pino, Commander of the Litueche Fire Department and Provincial Commander of Cardenal Caro.
The death occurred while Commander Becerra was participating in containment efforts for a wildfire that has threatened the region. According to preliminary reports, the commander suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest exacerbated by a pre-existing heart condition and smoke inhalation during the emergency.
The Mayor of Litueche, Rodrigo Palominos, confirmed the tragic news and detailed that, despite medical efforts at the local hospital, it was not possible to resuscitate Commander Becerra. The Presidential Delegation of O’Higgins has expressed its condolences to the volunteer’s family and the Litueche Fire Department, highlighting Becerra’s dedication and leadership, whose legacy will endure in the region.
The wildfire situation in the commune remains critical. Mayor Palominos reported that three large-scale fires have affected the area, compromising twelve homes and hindering control efforts due to adverse weather conditions. The Red Alert remains in effect for the fire in Santa Mónica, which has so far consumed more than 20 hectares and led to the evacuation of approximately 150 people.
The sacrifice of Commander Luis Becerra Pino will not be forgotten, and his death highlights the risks firefighters face in their tireless battle against the flames. The Litueche community, together with regional authorities, continues to work united to overcome this emergency and honor the memory of those who, like Becerra, have given their lives in service to others.
