In the darkness of early Sunday morning, a rural area of the commune of Cañete, in the Biobío Region, was the scene of an arson attack that left a house in ruins.

The incident, which resulted in no victims as the house was apparently abandoned, was quickly claimed by the Mapuche Lafkenche Resistance (RML), who left a political message demanding the freedom of Mapuche political prisoners and the liberation of Wallmapu.

The attack occurs in a context of high political tension, just eight days before the runoff election and hours after opposition candidate José Antonio Kast concluded his campaign in Concepción. The province of Arauco, where Cañete is located, is under a state of emergency, a measure that according to studies has reduced rural violence by 37%.

The Mirador de Peleco sector, about 7 kilometers south of Cañete, was the location where the attack was perpetrated. A group of individuals entered the property to set fire to the structure, which was fortunately uninhabited. At the scene, a banner was found attributing the action to the RML, linking it to the struggle for the Mapuche cause.

Following the alert, Carabineros and Firefighters arrived at the scene to control the flames and prevent them from spreading to other nearby structures. The Investigative Police (PDI) took charge of the inquiries, with Subprefect Carlos Henríquez, head of the Cañete Bipe, confirming the deployment of specialized personnel for the initial procedures.

The Prosecutor's Office requested the pertinent investigations to clarify the facts and determine responsibilities in this new attack in the province of Arauco, which highlights the complexity of the territorial conflict and the demands of the Mapuche people.
