Farmers Report that La Araucanía Lost 43% of Land Used for Wheat Cultivation
Farmers from Malleco revealed that La Araucanía has lost 43% of the land used for wheat cultivation over the last 10 years, calling for incentive measures to halt this trend in the region that produces the majority of this cereal nationwide.
Wildfires, falling prices, and high costs are among the factors recorded in the area, affecting producers who expressed concern over the loss of 46 thousand hectares in the past decade, according to data from Cotrisa and Agrosat.
The president of the Malleco Farmers' Association, Sebastián Naveillán, stated that 42% of the wheat grown in the country comes from La Araucanía, making it essential to protect these crops.
They reported that during the 2024-2025 season, wheat planting reached 60,177 hectares, 3,748 fewer than the previous year, solidifying a concerning downward trend.
Thus, Naveillán asserted that the wheat industry is going through a "critical" moment due to low profitability, hoping that farmers will have the right conditions to continue planting this cereal.
