Acoforag: "The acts of violence we are seeing are unacceptable"
The manager of the Association of Forestry Contractors, René Muñoz, stated that the implementation of "intrusive" measures in procedures is essential, and for this, the government must support the actions of the Armed Forces in regions under a State of Emergency. This comes in the context of an arson attack that damaged three containers and two heavy machines on a property in the commune of Arauco.
"The acts of violence we are seeing are unacceptable and must not be tolerated in our country. While the police are trained to act in cities, this goes beyond that: it is guerrilla warfare, it is terrorism, and the police forces are not adequately prepared to confront it. On the other hand, the military is. We must use them to address this threat," said Muñoz.
He added that the victims, "those who have died, the contractors who have lost their assets, cannot be forgotten. Celebrating an apparent decrease in these incidents is a mistake; we must reconsider our strategies. The State of Emergency should be more intrusive, allowing the military to act and capture these groups that operate persistently. We are sitting on a time bomb, and it is time to take firm action."
The mayor of Arauco, Mauricio Alarcón, pointed out that while these incidents do not frequently occur in the northern part of the province, they still concern the local community and generate "notable public alarm." He also described the incident as a "terrorist" act, regretting that the Chilean State reacts in a "reactive" manner to such events.
Additionally, he commented on the judicial work being carried out, noting that while the Prosecutor's Office investigates the crimes, the justice system—he said—is "guarantorist," as the accused have defense, but the victims do not.
In the Independent Democratic Union, the deputy for the area, Flor Weisse, described it as "unacceptable" that, despite the State of Emergency, a new attack has been recorded in the province of Arauco.
WAM and Political Prisoners
For this reason, regional councilor Cristián Medina is calling for increased police and military presence in the rural areas where these attacks occur.
He also added that in the area, "there are no Mapuche political prisoners." This follows the message left by the Weichán Auka Mapu through a banner at the site of the attack.
Along the same lines, the presidential delegate for the province of Arauco, Humberto Toro, reiterated that there are "no Mapuche political prisoners" in the area, adding that the actions of the radical organization do not align with the dialogue the government is conducting with the communities.
Personnel from Carabineros and the Navy arrived at the Tropén property of Forestal Arauco, located on Route P-40 in the same commune, and carried out the procedure, though no arrests have been reported so far.
