Preventive Detention for Tomás Antihuen for the Homicide of Police Officers in Cañete
After an intense formalization hearing, Tomás Antihuen was placed in preventive detention as a precautionary measure for his alleged involvement in the aggravated homicide of three police officers in Cañete, Biobío Region.
Judge Cristián Rosenberg de la Fuente ruled that Antihuen, who was a fugitive for several months, poses a danger to society, given the severity of the charges, which include the use of firearms and acting as part of a group.
The Prosecutor's Office accused Antihuen of being the direct perpetrator of the crimes of aggravated homicide, violent robbery, burning of a police vehicle, illegal possession of a firearm, and unauthorized transport of human remains. During the hearing, evidence linking the defendant to the crime scene was presented, including ammunition matching that used in the crime and a weapon belonging to one of the murdered officers.
Judge Rosenberg emphasized the planned execution of officers Carlos Cisternas Navarro, Sergio Arévalo Lobo, and Misael Vidal Cid, describing the act as a "rarely seen contempt for human life."
The Public Ministry's investigation suggests that the Antihuen brothers planned an ambush attack on the officers when they arrived to verify a nighttime house arrest, killing them and burning their bodies in a police vehicle.
Antihuen was admitted to the Biobío Penitentiary Complex, and the investigation period will extend until April 12.
