Timber Industry Associations Value Progress of the New National Forestry Service
The forestry sector received good news today: the Joint Committee of Congress, composed of five senators and four deputies, voted seven in favor and two against to maintain paragraph g) of Article 4 approved by the Senate in the bill creating the new National Forestry Service, Sernafor.
The associations grouped under the Futuro Madera network, along with other voices linked to the timber and forestry sectors, had been advocating for the retention of this paragraph, which will ensure that the new service has the authority to review, through binding reports, the requirements imposed by the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP) when they pertain to matters under Sernafor's jurisdiction.
The approval of the article will also allow for the establishment of a more balanced sectoral regulatory framework, prevent the imposition of unchecked regulations, and particularly strengthen Sernafor's management.
The network called for this vote to be replicated in the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, ensuring a service with effective regulatory autonomy over forest ecosystems and other vegetational formations.
For Futuro Madera members, it is especially important to guarantee an institutional and regulatory framework that promotes sustainable development, ensuring biodiversity conservation is addressed through management tools rather than just prohibitions.
