Wildfire in the foothills of Ñuble has consumed nearly 2 thousand hectares
Nearly 2 thousand hectares have been consumed by the San Patricio wildfire in the foothills of Ñuble, which has been under firefighting efforts for over three weeks and has placed two communes in the region under Red Alert.
Specifically, Coihueco and Pinto remain under alert due to the aforementioned fire. It began 3 weeks ago at the Peumayén Estate, a privately owned territory located within the Nevados de Chillán – Laguna del Laja Biological Corridor, an area protected by UNESCO.
This is an area rich in native and endemic Chilean flora and fauna, home to the northernmost population of Huemuls in the world.
Lucas Pimentel, Director of Jungla Peumayen, commented that while the daytime efforts have been exceptional, fear sets in at night, and more coordination is still needed.
In this regard, Pimentel asserts that the expectations set, conflicting information, and the lack of responsiveness from authorities are also barriers.
In response, Deputy Marta Bravo called on the Government to take immediate action regarding what she described as an ecological catastrophe.
According to the latest report from Senapred on Monday afternoon, 1,931 hectares have been consumed by this disaster.
In terms of resources, 18 Conaf brigades, 10 technicians from the institution, 15 aircraft, 1 ambulance, 1 command post, and 3 supervisors have been deployed—yet these efforts have not been enough to control the wildfire.
