John Deere Revolutionizes Steep Slope Work with the Shovel Logger 959ML
Technological advancements in forestry machinery have taken a significant leap with the latest generation of equipment designed for complex terrains. In this context, John Deere has developed the Shovel Logger 959ML, a high-performance machine that incorporates advanced technology to enhance safety, efficiency, and precision in steep slope operations.
Cutting-Edge Technology for Extreme Slopes
Fernando Ortiz, sales sub-manager of forestry machinery at Salfa, explained that the Shovel Logger 959ML is equipped with technological systems that enable real-time monitoring of the slope it operates on. Thanks to its advanced satellite connectivity, the machine provides second-by-second updates on the inclination percentage and slope degrees to operators, as well as planning, maintenance, and operations personnel.
Ortiz added that among its innovations, it connects operators with their fleet and collaborators, providing tools to configure, plan, and analyze work in real time. It also offers an online solution for PCs, tablets, and mobile phones to track operational progress. This software, combined with TimberMatic Maps, delivers a detailed overview of production—from the number of trees harvested to estimated tonnage.
Additionally, it provides precise information on fleet status and performance anytime and anywhere, while improving operational efficiency by effectively managing available resources.
Stability and Safety
Furthermore, the 959ML has been designed with a low center of gravity and an impressive 11-meter reach, granting it greater lifting capacity. Weighing 38,250 kg, its design prioritizes operator and crew safety.
It also features an electronic leveling system that maximizes forward tilt and limits lateral interference. Its tilt capacity is up to 64% higher compared to other equipment, ensuring better ergonomics and stability in extreme conditions.
Accident Reduction
To operate the Shovel Logger 959ML, Ortiz emphasized that operators undergo comprehensive training, including classroom instruction on the hydraulic system, structure, diesel engine, electrical system, and cabin. Simulators and augmented reality are also used to enhance understanding and operational practice.
Thanks to its advanced technology, the Shovel Logger 959ML significantly contributes to reducing accidents in steep slope operations, ensuring a safer and more efficient work environment.
