Gazitúa Addresses Challenges in La Araucanía and the Forestry Industry
In his final letter to shareholders as chairman of Empresas CMPC, Luis Felipe Gazitúa reflected on his tenure at the paper company, which he led for nine years and will leave this month, as he takes the helm at Bicecorp, another firm linked to the Matte Group.
Along with reviewing some of the company's achievements during his three consecutive terms as CMPC chairman, he recalled their participation in public debates. "That is why we spoke out about the various and complex facets of the conflict in La Araucanía. Although acts of violence have decreased due to legislative changes and greater commitment from authorities, the underlying issues remain, such as crime, poverty, and the limited development opportunities that regulations allow for Mapuche communities."
On the other hand, he noted the challenges facing the forestry industry. "This warning about the lack of a forward-looking vision regarding Chile's forestry development opportunities, as well as international investment projects, does not in any way imply a strategy of retreat from our country. Not only because we have a century-long history and deep roots in Chile. Not only because we maintain significant industrial and commercial facilities or because we have a high-level and capable team. But also because Chile continues to offer undeniable comparative advantages that allowed it to position itself as a global leader in the forestry and paper industry in just a few decades."
He added that "those advantages remain intact, but they require strong actions so that businesses of all sizes have the momentum and security to replant and invest again, mitigating the risks of fires, thefts, and attacks."
Gazitúa assumed the presidency of CMPC in 2016, following the departure of Eliodoro Matte Larraín in the aftermath of the tissue collusion case. "Today, we can affirm that our work and commitment to excellence have not only helped restore trust but have also repositioned us as a model to follow," he said in his letter to shareholders.
