3 Years of State of Emergency: Unions in La Araucanía Demand Its Continuation Until Attacks Reach Zero
As the three-year mark of the State of Emergency implementation approaches, productive unions in La Araucanía stated that the measure must remain in place until attacks reach zero in the Southern Macrozone.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Security, Luis Cordero, said the application of this constitutional tool is also linked to dismantling terrorist organizations operating in the area.
The Secretary of State highlighted a decline in violent incidents between 2021 and 2024 during his recent visit to the La Araucanía region. The authority assured that during this period, attacks decreased by 67% and nearly 700 attacks were prevented in the Southern Macrozone.
This assessment comes just days before the three-year anniversary (May 17) of the State of Emergency enacted under Gabriel Boric's government. The measure is valued by unions, though they argue it needs "improvement."
Unions Demand Continuation of State of Emergency
The president of the Multigremial of La Araucanía, Patricio Santibáñez, stated that the State of Emergency must continue until attacks reach zero, as serious arson attacks still occur periodically.
Similarly, the Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Development Society (SOFO) in Temuco, Carlo Rojas, asserted that the measure must be refined with political will and "greater presence in areas where the State is absent."
During his recent visit to La Araucanía, the Minister of Public Security, Luis Cordero, said the continuity of the State of Emergency depends on President Gabriel Boric. He also noted that its extension is not solely based on statistics but also on projections and dismantling organizations operating in the area.
A discussion gaining relevance just hours before Congress votes this Thursday on another extension of the State of Emergency for the La Araucanía region and two provinces in the Biobío Region.
