Clarified case of timber theft in Quellón: perpetrator released with signing
A reduced sentence was handed down yesterday to a man involved in a timber theft from a private property in Quellón. The case was investigated by civil police, leading to the seizure of materials valued at 17 million pesos.
Since last February, the Robbery and Criminal Focus Unit of the PDI in Castro carried out investigations after a farmer reported the crime on his property. Alongside the victim's statement, surveillance and audiovisual evidence analysis were conducted to identify the suspect.
According to Subprefect Carol Sánchez, head of the Criminal Investigation Brigade (Bicrim) of Chiloé’s capital, detectives from the specialized unit "concluded a three-month investigation related to the timber theft from a property in Quellón. The accused and the vehicle used in the crime were successfully identified."
As the officer explained, with the gathered evidence, police secured warrants for entry, search, seizure, and arrest, which were executed in the rural area of Curanué.
"The 50-year-old man was arrested and placed at the disposal of the (Mixed Court of Quellón), and his pickup truck was also seized," the source stated.
Yesterday, a hearing confirmed the legality of the apprehension based on the supporting judicial requirements. Additionally, the accused was formally charged with theft in an uninhabited place and, during the same hearing, acknowledged his responsibility, agreeing to a simplified procedure.
As reported by defense attorney Daniel Fuenzalida, his client was "sentenced to 61 days of imprisonment with the benefit of a conditional remission of the sentence for one year," resulting in his release with signing.
