Quarantine in Laja: SAG Takes Action Against Weevil Infestation
The Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) declared an effective quarantine within a 20-kilometer radius in the commune of Laja, Biobío Region, following the detection of a bark weevil infestation in pine trees.
This emergency measure was taken to prevent the spread of the pest, which poses a risk to pine species in the area, particularly radiata pine. The SAG implemented a series of phytosanitary actions, including a biological control program, to contain and suppress the presence of the weevil.
The discovery of the pest occurred during a routine forest inspection by SAG officials on a property in Laja. Immediately after detection, preventive measures were taken to secure the area and prevent the insect's spread.
The pine bark weevil not only affects pine trees but has also been found in other species such as firs, European larch, and yew in different parts of the world.
The regional director of SAG in Biobío, Roberto Ferrada, provided details about the situation and emphasized the importance of quarantine measures. One of the main concerns is the transport of green wood with bark, which can act as a vehicle for the weevil's dispersal. For this reason, the movement of forest products such as slabs, boards, beams, planks, and battens from the affected area to pest-free zones has been strictly regulated.
The quarantine and control measures are essential to protect the region's forestry industry, which is vital to the local economy.
The SAG will continue monitoring the situation and working in collaboration with forest property owners to ensure the pest is effectively contained and eradicated.
