Over the past two years, the Community Prevention Network has doubled its presence in the commune of Mulchén, Biobío Region.

What began in the 2023-2024 season with 5 communities has now grown to 12, thanks to the commitment and interest of the residents themselves, who have requested to learn about prevention and prepare for fires.

For this process, they will be sponsored by the company CMPC.

"Two years ago, we had a massive fire. My house was at great risk, as were others, and since we are very far from any nearby city, we decided to form this committee with the support of the Community Prevention Network," says Paulina Arteaga, president of the Neighborhood Council in the Aguas de Renaico sector, located about 45 minutes from Negrete and an hour from Mulchén.

"Our challenge is to work together and protect the lives of the members of the 22 families living in this area," she adds.

The other committee joining this effort is located in the Rapelco sector, home to 200 families, about 8 km from Negrete and 24 km from Mulchén.

Resident and community leader Patricia Namoncura explains that fires have occurred in the surrounding areas, making preparation to prevent such disasters essential. "Our goal is to protect people's lives, animals, and each family's property. The Community Prevention Network will train us in these areas, which is crucial," she says.

Community Prevention Network

The Community Prevention Network has been working for 8 years with residents in 96 communes. To achieve this, a prevention committee is formed, and those who choose to participate are trained and empowered in risk identification and management tools for their surroundings.

Currently, around 6,000 residents are committed to this year-round effort, achieving significant results. Just in the recent season, the 494 committees that make up the Network reduced fire occurrences by 16%, despite an increase in fires across Chile.

In the case of Mulchén, fire occurrences have systematically decreased at the communal level, reaching a -15% variation in the 2025 season compared to 2024. The Network's committees have also recorded a -12% decrease in fire occurrences.
