Biobío Drives the Biofuture with CMPC's Sustainable Roadmap
With the Biobío Region as both the setting and protagonist, CMPC presented its 2024 Integrated Report at the Suractivo event center in Hualpén, reinforcing the strategic role this area plays as the country’s forestry, industrial, and innovation hub.
The event, which brought together over 170 attendees, including authorities, business leaders, community representatives, academics, and forestry stakeholders, marked a milestone in the company’s defined path toward the "biofuture"—a vision of development combining sustainability, technology, and commitment to communities.
Biobío, Land of Wood and Future
The choice of the Biobío Region was no coincidence. Here, a significant portion of CMPC’s forestry and industrial operations are concentrated, along with its key territorial innovation programs. As Francisco Ruiz-Tagle, the company’s CEO, stated, “Biobío is not just our operational base—it’s also the heart from which we project a sustainable development model for Chile and the world.”
Among the company’s reported progress, an 89% advancement stands out in its 2030 greenhouse gas reduction target, alongside a 94% achievement in its zero-landfill waste goal by 2025. Additionally, over 320,000 hectares have been allocated for conservation, with a commitment to add another 100,000 by the end of this decade.
Territory, Community, and Resilience
The Integrated Report also emphasized CMPC’s social and territorial initiatives in the region. The Community Wildfire Prevention Network, comprising over 220 committees, has reduced fires by 61% in targeted areas since 2021. This is complemented by recreational forests, visited by more than 100,000 people annually, and green firebreaks that integrate prevention with local agriculture.
CMPC also highlighted that 100% of its raw materials hold FSC or PEFC international certifications, and over 880 suppliers have been assessed under ESG criteria, strengthening its commitment to a responsible economic ecosystem.
A Region Leading the Transformation
From Hualpén, backed by communities, authorities, and regional stakeholders, CMPC reaffirmed its commitment to Biobío as a center of innovation, conservation, and sustainable forestry development.
“The biofuture isn’t a promise—it’s happening here, in this region, with wood and nature as its protagonists,” concluded Ruiz-Tagle.
