Non-Timber Forest Product Exports Drop Nearly 19% in 2023
Despite remaining the top export destinations for Chilean Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs), Taiwan, the United States, and Germany were not spared from the overall downward trend recorded in 2023. According to official data released by Infor, total NTFP exports reached $87.5 million FOB, representing an annual decline of -18.9%, the lowest level in the last five years.
Chilean shipments reached 60 international markets, two more than in 2022, reflecting a slight expansion in coverage. However, 48.9% of the total export value was concentrated in just three countries: Taiwan, the United States, and Germany.
Taiwan, the top destination with a 19.4% share, reduced its imports by -22.3%. This market remains key for Sphagnum magellanicum moss, which accounts for 99.7% of its total imports from Chile.
In second place, the United States accounted for 17.6% of the exported value, with a -15.1% drop. This country maintains its interest in products such as quillay extract and rosehip fruits, which make up 77.0% of its purchases.
Germany, meanwhile, showed the sharpest contraction among the top three markets, with a -40.1% decline compared to 2022. The main product exported to this country is also rosehip fruits, accounting for 70.8% of its NTFP imports.
Other relevant markets such as France, China, South Korea, and the Netherlands also experienced significant declines. However, some countries like Mexico (+77.4%) and Brazil (+18.6%) showed notable growth, opening new opportunities for export diversification.
