New Helicopter Landing Points to Strengthen Firefighting Efforts in Biobío
The Airports Directorate of the Ministry of Public Works announced the upcoming activation of three emergency helicopter landing points at the María Dolores aerodrome in Los Ángeles.
With an investment of $793.7 million, these platforms will be operational by the end of the year, coinciding with the peak wildfire season. The National Director of Airports, Claudia Silva, confirmed that airport infrastructure is being adapted to improve logistics in fire management and respond effectively to emergencies.
The construction, set to begin in September, will include platform paving, safety strip formation, visual markings, and the supply of visual aids such as windsocks.
The main platform will cover an area of 3,969 square meters, while the two additional ones will each have 3,136 m². These points will be able to accommodate high-capacity helicopters like the Chinook, Erickson S-64E, and Airbus H-215, and will be connected to water wells to supply the aircraft.
With the completion of these platforms, the Biobío Region will have six emergency helicopter landing points, adding to the existing ones in Lebu, Los Álamos, and Talcahuano. This project is part of a national plan aiming to build around a hundred such facilities by March 2026, with 80 already established across the country.
