Acoforag Requests Security Measures from IACHR in the Southern Macrozone
Forestry contractors from the Southern Macrozone have denounced the State of Chile before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) due to the insecurity they have experienced in the area for years.
They requested the IACHR to order the Chilean State to guarantee the right to life, security, and work of the victims in the Southern Macrozone.
Specifically, it was at the end of July that the Association of Forestry Contractors made the submission to the Inter-American Court based in Washington, denouncing being the target of serious and systematic human rights violations.
Two weeks after the legal action was filed, the contractors are waiting to see whether the complaint is declared admissible or not, and for the Court to begin the corresponding process.
Under these circumstances, the guild expressed confidence that the Inter-American Court will initiate an analysis regarding the violence experienced by forestry workers and their families in the area.
René Muñoz, president of the association, indicated that this reality has been ongoing for almost 30 years but has intensified over the past 12 years without the State taking measures to restore the Rule of Law in the Southern Macrozone.
Rodrigo Ruiz, the contractors' lawyer, explained that the objective of this action is for the judicial body to determine the violation of the denounced rights and to hold the Chilean State responsible for restoring peace to the sector.
Ruiz emphasized that this submission does not seek compensation payments but rather for the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to urge the State of Chile to fulfill its duty to protect a population exposed to what they classify as terrorist acts.
