Forestry Contractors from the Southern Macrozone Bring Insecurity Complaint to the IACHR
In a conversation with Canal 9 Biobío TV, René Muñoz, manager of the Forestry Contractors Association, reported on the submission made to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), with the aim of denouncing the insecurity conditions under which the sector has had to operate for nearly three decades.
As he detailed, forestry contractors have seen an intensification of violent incidents over the last 12 years, with a peak of 104 attacks in 2022. Although current figures hover between 20 and 25 incidents annually, they assert that the risk remains constant and that the measures taken have not been sufficient to safeguard the integrity of workers and companies in the Southern Macrozone.
The action filed seeks for the IACHR to declare the complaint admissible and determine the violation of fundamental rights to work, safety, and life of those in this industry. Muñoz emphasized that this is not about demanding compensation, but rather about urging the Chilean State to fulfill its duty to protect the population and ensure safe conditions for carrying out forestry activities.
