With the participation of national and international specialists, the seminar "Forest Biomass, Energy, and Biofuels: Opportunities and Challenges for the Biobío Region" was held in Concepción, organized by the Forestry Institute (INFOR). The event brought together authorities, trade associations, researchers, and industry representatives to analyze the challenges of the Biofuels Law and the Bioenergy Strategy, with a strong emphasis on regional leadership.

Biobío is not only the main forestry region in the country but also concentrates more than 35% of the national pellet production, reinforcing its role as a driver in the transition toward a regulated, modern, and sustainable biofuels market.

A key region for the energy transition

During the event, experts from Spain shared experiences in innovation and regulation, while national stakeholders highlighted the importance of strengthening public-private collaboration. In this regard, the executive director of INFOR, Sandra Gacitúa, emphasized the role of firewood as a "social fuel" in Chile's energy matrix:

"Firewood is not the problem; moisture is. That is the most relevant takeaway from this seminar. Today, we have seen how the organization of trade associations and collaborative work with public policies enable progress toward sustainable and technological use of firewood, ensuring it remains a key social fuel for the country."

For his part, the Regional Minister of Energy of Biobío, Danilo Ulloa, highlighted the opportunity for the region to lead the implementation of the new regulations:

"Biobío has all the conditions to lead this modernization process. The Biofuels Law and the Bioenergy Strategy challenge us to incorporate innovation, traceability, and quality standards that benefit both families and regional productive development."

Future vision and collaboration

The Regional Minister of Agriculture, Pamela Gatti, emphasized the importance of collaboration between sectors to address industry gaps:

"This seminar allowed us to listen to trade associations, producers, and researchers, along with learning about international experiences. It is about generating reflection but also identifying opportunities and challenges that strengthen work in biomass and bioenergy at the regional and national levels."

A sector with regional identity

According to figures from the Ministry of Energy and INFOR, Biobío concentrates more than a third of the national pellet production and leads in forest biomass production, solidifying its position as a strategic region for the implementation of the Biofuels Law.

The event concluded with a call to continue building collaborative spaces and promoting the development of a sustainable, competitive biofuels market with a strong regional identity.
