Public Statement by Acoforag on Deadly Attack in La Araucanía
The Association of Forestry Contractors A.G. (Acoforag) deeply regrets and strongly condemns the cowardly attack that occurred in the commune of Victoria, La Araucanía Region, which took the life of 60-year-old Manuel León Urra and left 50-year-old César Osorio seriously injured. Both were workers performing surveillance duties at forestry operations.
We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, their coworkers, and CMPC. Once again, it is the forestry workers who bear the highest cost of an unacceptable terrorist violence that has persisted for over a decade in the Southern Macrozone.
As a trade association, we have repeatedly warned that the lack of security and effective measures by the State permanently endangers the lives of thousands of workers and their families. This new incident confirms the complete defenselessness in which we find ourselves and the inability of the Chilean State to guarantee fundamental rights such as life, physical integrity, and work.
On July 29, 2025, Acoforag filed a formal complaint with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), denouncing these serious and systematic violations of the human rights of contractors and forestry workers. Events like the murder of Manuel León Urra reinforce the urgency for international bodies to intervene and demand that the State fulfill its international duties under the American Convention on Human Rights.
What we demand is security, dignity, and the right to work and live in peace.
We issue a firm and direct call to the Government to take immediate and effective measures to protect the lives of workers.
