In a conversation with Ahora Es Cuando on Radio Infinita, the Defense Minister, Adriana Delpiano, addressed the armed attack that occurred in La Araucanía, which resulted in the death of a CMPC security guard and left another seriously injured. She defended the deployment of the Armed Forces, which are operating under the State of Exception in effect in the southern macrozone.

The State Secretary stated that "due to the time the attack occurred, it is unlikely that there would have been a patrol right at the door of that location. The numbers support that we are deployed throughout the area."

Delpiano also emphasized that although the attack is "a tremendous and strange case, because there was no robbery or claim," in recent months there has been a decrease in violent incidents compared to previous years. Nevertheless, she stressed that "nothing justifies or explains an attack like the one we experienced this week, in which a security guard of a timber company lost his life."

Debate on response capacity

The attack reopened the discussion about the effectiveness of the State of Exception and the responsiveness of the Armed Forces on the ground. Union leaders and local parliamentarians have questioned the speed of the response and are demanding greater security for workers.

The Minister insisted that public security remains the responsibility of Carabineros and that the Armed Forces play a supporting role: "The Army assists in patrols, road clearing, and preventive visibility, but investigative and legal action is in the hands of the police and the Public Prosecutor's Office."

Meanwhile, in Victoria, the family of Manuel León mourns the loss of a worker who, like many in the region, became a victim of the rural violence that persists despite security reinforcements.
