Government Invokes Anti-Terrorism Law Following Arson Attack at Forestry Operation in La Araucanía
The Government confirmed it will apply the Anti-Terrorism Law following the arson attack that occurred last weekend at a forestry operation located on the route connecting Carahue and Nueva Imperial in the La Araucanía region.
The decision was announced by the Regional Minister of Public Security, Israel Campusano, to Radio Bío Bío, who explained that the measure was adopted after receiving the corresponding technical and legal reports. "This and other attacks will be investigated under the applicable laws. We want to convey calm to the citizens, because the Executive will use all legal tools to classify and confront these acts of violence," stated the authority.
The attack, recorded early Saturday morning, resulted in significant material losses after a group of unknown individuals set fire to heavy machinery, including a motor grader, a backhoe, a tire handler, a skidder, and a twin machine. Additionally, a trailer and a mobile canteen were damaged. All equipment belonged to the company Antulemo, subcontracted by Forestal Territoria.
It is worth recalling that the Executive has been criticized in recent days for not invoking the Anti-Terrorism Law in the attack that occurred in Victoria, where forestry workers were ambushed and one of them was killed. In that case, the Government opted to apply the charge of criminal association with aggravated homicide.
With the decision to now invoke the Anti-Terrorism Law, the Government aims to toughen criminal prosecution against attacks in the area, amid a scenario of violence that has raised alarm both in communities and the forestry sector.
