In the Los Ríos region, nearly 40 huemuls are undertaking the task of repopulating their species in the mountainous area.

This is being done with the support of public and private organizations from Chile and Argentina, such as the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve and the Administration of National Parks of the trans-Andean country.

This is achieved through the creation of a transnational corridor, which allows huemuls to move safely and without threats.

For years, indiscriminate hunting and attacks by introduced animals pushed the huemul to the brink of extinction. However, today, the emblem of the national coat of arms is once again becoming part of the Andean landscape.

The Southern Huemul Conservation Center is also working on the conservation efforts, so the species is being monitored and protected to continue repopulating Patagonia.

This was stated to Radio Bío Bío by the executive director of the Huilo Huilo Foundation, Rodolfo Menichetti.

The work began with the transfer of 3 specimens from the Aysén region to Los Ríos, and so far, nearly 40 huemuls remain under monitoring in Huilo Huilo and the Lanín and Nahuel Huapi National Parks.

The head of the conservation department of Lanín Park, Nicolás Ferreira, described the return of the huemul to the wild area of Argentina as historic, using the aforementioned transnational corridor.

Currently, representatives from various Chilean and Argentine organizations are gathered in the Huilo Huilo area for the first seminar on the repopulation of the huemul (which ends this Friday).
