Fepasa Workers Report Shooting Attack on Freight Train in La Araucanía
A serious complaint was filed by the crew of a freight train from the company Ferrocarril del Pacífico S.A. (Fepasa), who stated that while traveling through the Colo bridge area in the commune of Victoria, they heard impacts attributable to gunshots against the locomotive while transiting through the La Araucanía region.
According to information provided by the head of the Carabineros zone in La Araucanía, General Patricio Yáñez, the complaint was received at the Fourth Police Station of Victoria, after which it was immediately reported to the Public Ministry.
The Prosecutor's Office ordered police personnel to carry out procedures to clarify what happened and verify whether there were indeed damages caused by ballistic projectiles.
It was indicated that Carabineros conducted a preliminary inspection of the locomotive, although it was not conclusively established that there were impacts. However, the corresponding protocol for this type of situation was applied, and instructions were given to continue with the investigations.
The incident affecting the freight train, which occurred in a strategic section of the railway line connecting the south with the center of the country, revives concerns about the safety of railway workers in La Araucanía.
In fact, this would not be the first time a freight train has suffered an incident of this nature in the La Araucanía region. In August 2023, a group of around 12 individuals allegedly stopped a freight train in the same region after cutting the air valves of the cars transporting eucalyptus.
On that occasion, the antisocial individuals stole the wood and threatened the crew with bladed and firearms, in addition to throwing logs onto the public road, at which point shots were reportedly fired into the air.
As of the closing of this edition, no further details had been released about the episode that occurred at the Colo bridge, while police procedures are still ongoing.
