Construction of a Wildlife Rescue Center Begins in the Precordilleran Zone of Los Ríos
In the precordilleran zone of the Los Ríos region, construction has begun on a wildlife rescue center to care for animals near their natural habitat.
Surrounded by mountains, native forests, and flanked by the imposing white of the Mocho Choshuenco volcano, the groundbreaking ceremony for this center took place within the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, near the town of Neltume.
This facility will provide care for a variety of wildlife species, particularly those from precordilleran areas.
This is significant because currently, the only rehabilitation center of this kind is located in Valdivia—over 160 kilometers from the precordillera, which is where the greatest diversity of wildlife is found.
The Conservation Director of the Huilo Huilo Reserve, Eduardo Arias, stated that its main feature will be the swift reintroduction of animals that can be discharged.
When a wild animal or bird is found injured, whether due to attacks by other species or human factors such as vehicle collisions, the standard procedure involves contacting the Agricultural and Livestock Service, which also oversees rescue centers.
The Director of SAG in Los Ríos, Carlos Burgos, noted that decentralizing care for wild animals is a significant step forward.
The first phase includes the work of at least two veterinarians, and it may also serve as a training center for professionals in related fields.
It will also have space for clinical care, quarantine, and recovery areas.
This animal rescue center will be funded privately, with construction expected to conclude by the end of the year, followed by administrative processes for its launch.
