Yumbel Joins the Fight Against Forest Fires in Biobío
In a key meeting held at the Regional Presidential Delegation of Biobío, an important milestone was marked with the addition of Yumbel’s mayor, José Sáez, to the Greater Concepción Forest Fire Prevention Association. This meeting, which included the presence of key stakeholders such as Conaf, Senapred, and Corma, allowed for the establishment of priorities in creating firebreaks, conducting preventive burns, and executing pending projects in the Regional Government.
The defined progress includes the implementation of firebreaks, proper management of forest waste, and comprehensive preparation of the region for the 2025-2026 fire season. The presidential delegate, Eduardo Pacheco, emphasized the importance of early coordination among municipalities, especially in high-risk rural areas. Immediate commitments include prioritizing firebreaks in collaboration with MOP and Conaf, managing forest waste, and organizing a regional coordination meeting with all municipalities, scheduled for next week.
Penco’s mayor, Rodrigo Vera, stressed the need for preventive measures and the urgency for the Regional Government to prioritize the transfer of resources for already approved projects, such as acquiring equipment for Firefighters and water tanker trucks. Meanwhile, Yumbel’s mayor, José Sáez, newly incorporated into the association, highlighted the need to extend coordination to more communes, especially rural ones, which have suffered significant losses due to fires, such as the more than 4,700 hectares burned in Yumbel in 2023.
The Greater Concepción Forest Fire Prevention Association, founded last August 22nd in Penco, is a public-private initiative that seeks to coordinate efforts among municipalities, Conaf, Firefighters, Senapred, and sectoral ministries to reduce vulnerability to fires. The next working session will be held in Florida, one of the communes most affected by fires in previous seasons, with the goal of adding new municipalities to this preventive effort.
With these efforts, the association reinforces its commitment to consolidating a municipal bloc coordinated with the State, incorporating new mayors, and anticipating actions that reduce the vulnerability of communities to fire.
