Biobío Strengthens Coordination to Face Wildfire Season
Under the slogan "Biobío Without Fires," the Regional Government brought together around thirty public, private, and civil society actors in a working session aimed at coordinating actions for the 2025-2026 wildfire season.
The meeting was led by Regional Governor Sergio Giacaman, who emphasized the need to join efforts: "We want to work towards ensuring this summer has a low impact from the perspective of wildfires, and for that, what all actors can do is very relevant."
Investment in Prevention
The authority highlighted the investment of over $26 billion in 28 projects aimed at acquiring equipment and improving infrastructure for the various fire departments in the region.
During the session, the initiative promoted by the Mayor of Penco, Rodrigo Vera, was also praised. He advocated for the creation of the Greater Concepción Wildfire Prevention Association, which also includes Tomé, Yumbel, and Florida. "Any fire affecting one of these municipalities has a high probability of impacting the others, so coordination is essential," he explained.
Complex Scenario
The climate outlook adds pressure to the joint efforts. The Regional Director of Senapred, Alejandro Sandoval, warned that the area is facing a nearly 30% rainfall deficit, anticipating a summer with "very poor conditions" for emergency control.
Cross-Sector Commitment
The session helped identify gaps, responsibilities, and commitments of each organization, with the goal of strengthening prevention and emergency response. For Alejandro Casagrande, President of CORMA Biobío-Ñuble, this space paves the way for new alliances: "We believe this begins to mobilize other institutions and raise awareness among neighbors and the region’s population."
