Trump confirms new tariffs on lumber and furniture: they will increase over time

The President of the United States (USA), Donald Trump, announced this Monday the imposition, starting next October 14th, of an additional 10% tariff on imports of softwood lumber and wood products.

He will also impose a new 25% levy on cabinets and other furniture made from this material.

This is stated in a text released this Monday by the White House, in which the president has also established that these new rates will increase over time.

Tariffs on lumber and furniture

Starting January 1, 2026, the rate will increase from 10% to 30% for softwood lumber and foreign sawn timber, used in a wide variety of building materials; and from 25% to 50% for finished kitchen furniture "as well as imported parts for use" in them.

These levies "will remain in effect, except for countries with which the United States reaches an agreement that addresses the threat of impairment to national security posed by imports of wood products," Trump added.

The tariffs, in turn, "are in addition to any other duty, tax, fee, exaction, or charge applicable to such imported wood products."

According to figures from the Central Bank, Chilean exports of wood and furniture to the United States totaled US$1.069 billion in 2024.

Of the total, shipments of sawn, planed; rough, impregnated, or preserved wood amounted to US$330.05 million, while wood boards, panels, veneers, sheets, and agglomerates; carpentry work and parts for constructions recorded exports of US$336.87 million, with both categories being in the top 10 of products most exported to the country.

The White House occupant indicated that these measures are the result of an investigation ordered in March to the Department of Commerce and concluded last July, and he assured that they "will strengthen supply chains, reinforce industrial resilience, create high-quality jobs, and increase the utilization of national capacity for wood products."

The US president previewed last Thursday an additional 30% tariff on "upholstered furniture" and another 50% on "all kitchen furniture, bathroom vanities, and related products," a measure he said would take effect on October 1st.

That same day, a 100% tariff on all "brand-name or patented" pharmaceutical products and another 25% on large trucks are scheduled to take effect.
