Municipality of Florida Joins Community Prevention Network

In an effort to strengthen preparedness and prevention against wildfires, the Municipality of Florida signed a collaboration agreement with the Community Prevention Network, an organization that promotes the reduction of these events in urban-rural interface areas.

The agreement was signed by Mayor Rodrigo Montero, who emphasized the importance of training and empowering local communities. "The more communities are prepared, the more we can reduce the occurrence of fires. This agreement is key to continuing progress in that direction," stated the municipal leader during the signing ceremony, held at the close of the local Disaster Risk Management Committee (Cogrid).

The Community Prevention Network was established in 2017, following the mega-fires that affected the Maule region. Since then, it has formed local committees in rural and urban communities between the O’Higgins and Los Ríos regions, benefiting over 300 thousand people with concrete prevention actions and linking community prevention to all stakeholders in the territories, whether public or private.

In the commune of Florida, the Network has 22 active committees covering more than 55% of the municipal territory. As part of the agreement, the municipality will create its own municipal prevention committee, based on the Network’s methodology. This model includes risk identification, mapping, emergency protocols, and community planning.

"Wildfire prevention can be addressed collaboratively among all stakeholders in the territory. We have spent five seasons reducing the number of incidents in the areas where we apply this methodology, demonstrating its effectiveness," stated Myriam Mellado, coordinator of the Community Prevention Network.

Prior to the signing of the agreement, municipal officials participated for one month in training sessions provided by the Network, focused on replicating its work model and strengthening local capacities for future emergencies.
