Illegal Logging Operation Dismantled in Corral: One Arrested
In a successful operation, detectives from the Wood Theft Investigation Team, part of the Criminal Investigation Brigade (Bicrim) of Valdivia, arrested a 57-year-old man for carrying out an illegal logging operation on government-owned land in the commune of Corral.
Subprefect Cristian Muñoz, of Bicrim Valdivia, reported that after meticulous investigative work in collaboration with the Public Ministry and the National Assets Ministry, the arrest of the individual was achieved. The suspect had usurped state land, where he built a residence and operated a portable sawmill, processing illegally logged wood from the same property for subsequent commercialization.
The police operation resulted in the seizure of approximately 50 pine trees, each 30 meters tall, a tractor, a pickup truck, and a chainsaw, with an estimated total value exceeding 26 million Chilean pesos.
The detainee, a Chilean citizen with no prior criminal record, was placed at the disposal of the judiciary, facing charges for the flagrant crimes of Wood Theft and Usurpation.
This case highlights the importance of surveillance and control in the management of natural resources, as well as the legal consequences faced by those who engage in illicit activities on government lands. The swift action of the authorities has not only halted ongoing illegal activities but also protected the nation's forest heritage.
