A former firefighter and ex-official of the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) was arrested under the accusation of having started a forest fire in the locality of Patagual, commune of Coronel. The blaze, which consumed 10 hectares, has led to the extension of his detention until Tuesday the 13th, pending key expert results for the formulation of charges.
The chief prosecutor of the Coronel Prosecutor's Office, Hugo Cuevas Gutiérrez, led the investigations, which included the analysis of film material and testimonies. These procedures allowed for the identification of the former volunteer, who confessed to having started the fire with a lighter. After igniting pine needles and seeing the flames spread, the accused left the scene.
The arrest was carried out by specialized personnel from the Regional Section OS9 Bío Bío at the 4th Carabineros Police Station of Coronel, following the order of the Guarantee Judge of the Coronel Court. The case has shocked the community, with the individual being described as "a pyromaniac" by the head of the Risk and Disaster Management Unit during a session of the Municipal Council.
Lieutenant Colonel José Rubio of Carabineros and the Superintendent of the Coronel Fire Department, Eduardo Monsalves, have expressed their repudiation and dismay at the events. Monsalves emphasized that the Fire Department reported the volunteer and immediately disqualified him, completely disassociating him from the institution.
The community of Coronel and the relevant authorities await the results of the investigation to fully clarify the circumstances of the fire and the actions of the accused before, during, and after the event.
