The municipality of Puerto Montt announced that it will file a criminal complaint for the crime of arson, after it was confirmed that the fire that consumed part of the Alerce Viveros park on Tuesday night was intentionally set.
The blaze, which affected approximately 0.8 hectares, is currently under control and in the process of being extinguished, thanks to the rapid action of emergency teams and the existence of firebreaks.
Mayor Rodrigo Wainraihgt Galilea strongly condemned the act and assured that the municipality is taking all necessary measures to identify and pursue those responsible.
The Municipal Penal Unit, led by lawyer Marcos Emilfork, is already working on the case. "Unfortunately, we had a forest fire in our Alerce Viveros park, which was intentional. I want to absolutely condemn these criminals who did this," declared Wainraihgt.
The fire started around 9:30 PM with five simultaneous hotspots, one of which failed to spread. The rapid activation of a Unified Command Post (PMU) and the collaboration of Conaf, Firefighters, Carabineros, the municipal Disaster Risk Management (GRD) team, and the Alerce Territorial Delegation were key to controlling the situation.
The mayor also highlighted the importance of firebreaks, mentioning that their construction in the commune will be tripled this year. "We are carrying out a series of safety perimeters in our city, including the one at Alerce Vivero, which prevented this fire from continuing to spread," he stated.
The municipality of Puerto Montt reaffirms its commitment to the safety of its natural spaces and the prosecution of criminal acts that threaten them. The criminal complaint is another step in the fight against impunity and in the protection of the commune's natural heritage.
